Vulkan - Primarch of the Salamanders by Greyall Vulkan - Primarch of the Salamanders by Greyall
Vulkan, the Primarch of the Salamanders.

Drew this as a prize for a contest held on a great place to talk 40K online: Bolter & Chainsword. The winner: a nice fellow that goes by the name of Brother Dakath.

You know this guy's backstory, so I'll focus on the drawing.

First things first, no way was I going to fit Vulkan inside a lowly Power Armour, even one custom-made for a Primarch. He's supposed to be one of the strongest among his brothers. So I got him a Terminator armour, albeit without the usual "cabin" above his head.

I tried to make him pretty menacing and primal. Vulkan's often portrayed as being on the tamer side of the Primarch spectrum, but he was raised in a world of fire and constant natural catastrophes, fought off Dark Eldar and giant lizards, while living with a good but certainly hardened people. So he might be a nice guy, but he won't exactly think twice before dealing with any enemy in old Imperial fashion.

The flamethrower-gauntlet got changed, since the one Vulkan He'stan carriers is...pretty meh. So I turned it into a saurian mandible.

The other weapon, the hammer...well, Vulkan is a man marked by his fathers. So the idea was for him to have crafted an hammer in dark iron resembling his Nocturnean father's (a blacksmith) tool and to sculpt a father in each side. You can see his "first" father on the side of the hammer, toiling in his forge. I opted to show him instead of the Emperor to reinforce Vulkan's (and, later, his Legion/Chapter) connection to his people.

In all honesty, I think he's one of my best pieces. State your mind, guys.

Ok, this is by far the best Vulkan drawing/painting/art I have ever seen *____* By the way, make Perturabo, the amount of detail on him would suit you with all those pipes and mechanical thingies

Cmon.... Fear no art for you are art incarnite xD No really, that would be the most awesome thing evah *____* Well, you could also do Curze, just make an awesome helm for him too, would make him even more scary.... if you want :P

I have drawn Curze, though it's definitely not one of my best. Also, I usually draw Primarchs with bare heads, though helmets are one of the most awesome parts of armour.

Well, helmets give an extra load of badassness. Also, Vulkan seems to be the best Primcarch by you (thus far). If I might suggest, do Aplharus, since he doesn`t have that many details, yet, some neat ornaments and has an offical and canon helm (source: DoW Soulstorm). If not that, Horus and Mortarion would be also awesome.... just saying, those are things that I would love to see by your divine hands, oh all mighty remeberancer

Lol. Well, in the Dawn of War games, Marines can somersault and spring-jump onto their feet. But Terminators...well, I guess the armour designer never anticipated them falling over.

Beautiful work as always, brother! The *only* critique that I have on this are the ratios- his arms and head seem to be a little too small compared to the rest of his body. I know termie armor tends to dwarf those inside, so the head makes sense, but his arms seem a little short compared to the length of his legs. Other than that, the head of his hammer is a VERY nice touch, as well as the flanking lizards on his chest and helm respectively. Keep it up! (And do Corax next ;) )

I think I may have gone overboard with the arms, here. Corax will come, promise.

I don't know, mate, he was raised on one hell of a world, often under attack by Dark Eldar...his praetorian guard certainly wore lots of trophies, I can't see why he wouldn't.

I myself would've given him slightly larger, and longer arms. But then, I myself wouldn't have been able to pull this off...well done! Gotta love the scales and spikes everywhere.

You see, you done the "Raptors" series, in process of doing the "Terminators" series...
but what about the "Primarchs" series?

I'll be mixing Primarchs and Chaos Terminators, from now on. Above all, I'll only draw a Primarch whenever I feel I'm making him justice.

I was thinking of something more majestic, to be honest, less mutated.

And, due to popular request, I'll be thinking about and drawing Primarchs, with the Terminators for those less inspired moments. Of course, my previous answer still stands, I won't draw awesomeness incarnated unless I'm feeling it'll be awesome.

Thanks, mate.
